If guitarist Rusty Wright gets some funny looks when he starts singing some blues song about being mistreated by a mean woman, that will be because the other singer-guitarist in his band is his wife, Laurie LaCross-Wright.
Born in Flint, Mich., Rusty Wright says his band’s music is a mix of Texas and Chicago-style blues and Southern and Detroit rock.
As for LaCross-Wright, who began playing guitar at age 10, she says, “I find mixed breed pets more interesting and likable than those with pedigrees — and feel the same way about music. I enjoy it more when it’s mixed up and wish the industry didn’t place so much emphasis on pigeonholing music by genre.”
The couple met in 1993 when she the publisher of a music newspaper called Riff Magazine and she featured his band in one of the first issues. They began dating in late 1996, began performing music together in 1998 and married in 2001. They launched The Rusty Wright Band in 2004.
The band released their fifth album, “Wonder Man,” in 2015. The set includes the title track and the song “Whiskey Drinkin’ Woman.”
Rusty Wright plays The Bank & Blues on December 23rd. Doors open at 8:00, show starts at 9:00.
